I would think...
“I know it’s important to love yourself and to have self-esteem so that you can be healthy in relationships. But how?
How, how, HOW on earth do I actually DO it? Not just say ‘I love you, Jeanine.’ But really, truly change what I see when I look in the mirror alone in my room?
So that I can change how I show up on dates.
So I can change how I show up at work.
Change how I show up when I need to set boundaries.
Change how I make decisions over what I will and won’t accept from others. And how they treat me.
So that I can feel sure of myself and stop chasing, chasing, chasing after men who are giving me tiny, stale bread crumbs of attention.”
I needed a plan. I needed strategies and methods I could practice and integrate into my consciousness so that self-love, respect, and appreciation felt like my truth.
(Instead of a mask I was wearing to play dress-up, ACTING like everything was okay.)
I needed that kind of support. But I didn’t trust that it existed.
I used to think,
“Well, even IF I could find a coach like that. Even IF I could find some sort of program… who would I do it with?
I’ve got girlfriends, sure. But I can’t share the deepest depths of my shame with them around my lack of love. What would they even say? How could they even help? They can’t.”
Which meant that I felt lonely and isolated and stressed. A lot.
So, what did I do? I poured myself into my business, my career, my degrees, my research. And I filled my days and nights with what I knew I could do well.
I put my time and energy into what I could feel successful with, and I let love go. I gave up. I settled. I made excuses. I struggled.
But what I didn’t know then…
Was that the spin cycle of struggle, of wishing, of wanting, of hoping, of waiting I was living in…
I didn’t know it would last decades. And yet it did.
And as Time Went On, I Used to Wish I Could Just “Fix” My Problems in Love. And That I Could Do It In A Weekend.
(Like taking on a weekend DIY home reno project. I wanted to roll up my sleeves, get to work, and then cross “learn how to love” off my list and revel in the beautiful change I built for years to come.)
I wished that for one weekend, I could stop swiping left, stop getting drinks, stop ending the night with a pint of ice cream and a spoon…
